Natürliche Vielfalt im Naturpark

Natural Diversity in the Erzgebirge/Vogtland Nature Park

Did you know...

...that there are treasures just waiting to be discovered in the Erzgebirge/Vogtland Nature Park? We invite you to join us on a journey of discovery. Marvel at nature’s riches and take the time to reflect on the landscape.

Treasures are valuable because they are beautiful, rare and unique. Ours include ancient moors and cold, bubbling mountain streams, flowering mountain meadows and blooming wet meadows, orchard meadows filled with fruit, and hedgerows that criss-cross the landscape. Our ancestors shaped or even created these highly diverse habitats through their work and industry.

In battling the moors and forcing watercourses into straight channels, farmers gained species-rich pas-tures by using the land in a way that was in tune with nature. Their use of wood from the hedgerows rejuvenated these protective barriers.

Today, we are trying to return straightened streams and moors that have been drained to a near-natural state. But what will happen to the meadows if we keep mowing them up to six times a year? What will happen to the hedgerows if we stop using their wood and helping them regenerate? And what will happen to the orchard meadows if we get all our fruit from intensively cultivated farmland?

Our News page will keep you up to date with information on everything from excursions to reports on biodiversity within the Erzgebirge/Vogtland Nature Park and beyond – because nature doesn’t stop at regional or national borders.
